The Nueces Center for Mental Health and Intellectual Disabilities (MHID) is dedicated to helping the residents of Nueces County who are living with mental illness and/or intellectual and developmental disabilities. We serve over 10,000 people each year with psychiatric and behavioral health care outpatient services, counseling, training, employment assistance, housing support, homeless outreach, children's mental health care and more.

General Description

Under the supervision of the TCOOMMI Program Director, the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) is responsible for performing moderately complex medical aide work. Responsibilities and functions include: obtaining reports and records from medical records or for med records; checking clients in and out of medical clinics, completing paperwork as required, and performs nursing functions as appropriate. Performs related work as assigned and trained. Maintain clear TCIC/NCIC background checks and driving record.

Education, Training, and Experience (including licensure and certification)

Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent is generally preferred. (GED) Experience and education may be substituted for one another. Attended a school and completion for Medical Assistant Tech certification and met all required hours of on the job training. Minimum 1 year of experience in health care work. Bilingual (English and Spanish) is preferred.

Must have reliable transportation. May use personal vehicle to conduct business. Must have a valid driver's license at all times, liability insurance and a good driving record. Have clear criminal and TCIC/NCIC background check.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • In the course of being employed, understands and implements trauma informed care practices.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of patient care
  • Skill in the use of equipment used in patient care
  • Ability to plan, evaluates, and provides patient care.
  • Computer literate
  • Ability to work with mentally ill offenders who are involved in the criminal justice system
  • Have excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively
